Frequently Asked Questions

Active Latch Nipples

Why don't Twist Active Latch nipples and Twist Pouches have venting valves?

Vents are typically used in feeding bottles to allow air to enter the bottle as the baby drinks to prevent a vacuum from forming inside the bottle, making it increasingly difficult to get milk out of the bottle.

Since Twist Pouches are flexible (unlike regular bottles), they collapse as your baby drinks. The bag shrinks down as the volume of milk decreases, and no vacuum is formed as the milk is depleted. The amount of suction required is the always same regardless of milk level, and no air needs to enter the pouch to help push the milk out. This eliminates air from the pouch.

How can I tell which nipple flow rate I am using? How do I read the nipple?

The flow rate is molded into the nipple. If you look on the bottom of the nipple, the flow rate is molded into the flat bottom section of the "cork" that pops into the Twist Pouch.

The text can be quite faint, and it may be easier to read under a bright light, or by holding it at an angle relative to the light.

What is the easiest and cleanest way to remove the Twist Active Latch nipples from Twist Pouches?

To gently remove the nipple from the pouch, grab the nipple near the base and slowly pull it away from the bottle. This will prevent the nipple from suddenly releasing from the pouch. The lower part of the nipple may almost turn inside out while you pull - don't worry, you can just pop it back later!

How do I connect Twist Active Latch Nipples to Twist Pouches?

It only takes a small amount of force to pop the Twist Active Latch Nipple into the Twist Pouches.  The bottle, with pouch attached, should be on a flat, sturdy surface when pushing the nipple into place; make sure the nipple case top is attached while pushing; you want to avoid touching the nipple tip directly.

You will know the nipple is in place: 1) you will hear a "pop" sound as the nipple falls into position, 2) you will feel the nipple fall into in place, and 3) the outer edge of the nipple at the base should barely touch the top of the bottle.

Kiinde Manuals

Kozii Warmers

What is the proper way to clean a Kozii Warmer?

It is recommended that you follow the cleaning instructions specified in the Kozii Product Manual. The manual is available at: Kozii Instruction Manual

CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Always turn timer to “0” and unplug Kozii before cleaning.  Do not immerse in water.  Do not use scouring pads, solvents or abrasive cleaners, as these could damage Kozii.

Every 2-3 days (CLEANING):

  • Dump any remaining water out of Kozii using the overflow drain hole at the top and back of the warming chamber.
  • Pour about 1 cup of very mild soap and water solution into the warmer and wait for it to drain down into the reservoir. Swirl the unit around (do not turn it upside down) and pour the water out of the overflow drain hole at the top and back of the warming chamber.  Rinse with fresh water until the water comes out without soap suds.  When rinsing, make sure to allow water to drain down into the reservoir each time freshwater is added.
  • Wipe the outer surface of Kozii, as well as inside of the warming chamber with a damp cloth or sponge using a very mild solution of liquid soap.  Wipe with fresh water.  Air dry.
  • Refill according to the filling instructions.

Every 2 months (DE-SCALING):

  • It is very important to de-scale Kozii every 2 months to ensure it continues to work properly.  To de-scale, mix ½ cup (4 fl oz/120ml) of white vinegar with 1 cup (8 fl oz/240ml) of cold water and pour the mixture into the warming chamber.  Allow the liquid to stand in the unit for 10-20 minutes.      DO NOT TURN KOZII ON OR PLUG KOZII IN DURING DE-SCALING.
  • Pour the mixture out of the overflow drain hole at the top and back of Kozii.
  • Rinse with fresh water 3 times.  When rinsing with fresh water, be sure to wait for the water to drain down into the reservoir each time and swirl it around gently before pouring it out.

What are the dimensions of the Kozii Warmer? Will my bottle fit inside?

The Kozii reservoir is 3.1" in diameter and 3” deep. The diameter is oblong, to allow water to flow around a 3.1” diameter bottle.

Kozii also has a narrow slot with extra width to accommodate flat, frozen breastmilk storage bags up to 3.8" wide. As such, Kozii will accommodate all bags and bottles found in the marketplace.

You can find a dimensioned drawing of Kozii's warming chamber at Kozii Warmer Inside Dimensions

How long does it take to warm using the Kozii Warmer?

There are many factors that affect the warming time for your child’s meal, including bottle type (plastic, glass, bottle with liner, breastmilk storage bag, food jar), starting temperature (room, refrigerator, freezer), and amount of breastmilk, formula or food.

Please use this chart of approximate warming times in the Kozii start guide (Kozii Warmer Simple Start Guide) as a convenient starting point for determining the appropriate warming time for your specific meal type, container, and starting temperature.  After only a couple of uses, you will learn exactly what the best warming times are for you.  Always test the meal temperature yourself before offering it to your child.

In the guide, we assume a serving temperature of 90F. Note, this is a slightly cooler than body temperature. Most babies are fine with this temperature, but if your baby wants their milk warmer, you will need to add a bit of time to the numbers in the chart.

How hot does the water temperature get on the Kozii Warmer?

The water bath in Kiinde Kozii is thermostatically controlled to the temperature of warm tap water (60C/140F). Due to manufacturing tolerances, etc, there may be a few seconds that the water bath temperature does get slightly higher than 60C, but due to the thermal gradient across the container the milk is in (bottle or bag), you can safely assume none of the milk is exposed to that temperature.

When warming with Kiinde Kozii, while the water bath may be at 60C, the inner wall of the bottle is many degrees cooler. All the milk in the bottle or bag is at roughly the same temperature (i.e. no hot spots), due to the gradual, uniform heating, the low temperature of the water bath, and the high thermal conductivity of the milk itself. As long as the user ensures that the warming time is not set excessively high, the bulk temperature of the milk will not exceed 40C.

Steam warmers apply 100C to the outside of the container. Several degrees of temperature drop across the wall of the bottle will leave the inside wall of the bottle (the part that contacts the milk) quite hot. Even with high thermal conductance, there will be a much larger volume of milk that is over 40C.

Why shouldn't I steam or microwave my breastmilk?

Studies show that exposure of breastmilk to temperatures higher than 60C can destroy important antibodies and denature the proteins contained in breastmilk. The temperature of steam is 100C or hotter. Microwaves can cause local hot spots within the breastmilk; if the overall temperature of the milk feels safe, small pockets within the volume may have been temporarily heated well above 60C.

My Kozii Warmer is not heating or warming; what can I do?

If you have an Original Kozii Warmer:

There is a chance that the safety thermostat in your Kozii Warmer may have tripped.

Please follow the procedure to reset it:

  1. Unplug your unit from the wall.
  2. Empty the water from the unit
  3. Flip the unit over. You will see a small hole above the text "MODEL: K1395.R1.NA". Insert a paperclip/pin/toothpick into the hole and push firmly till you hear a click. Note: the click may be very soft or even inaudible, requiring that you refill the unit and test to check if it worked.
  4. Remove the pin/toothpick/paperclip.
  5. Refill the unit with water and try again. Please run your unit for a few cycles (warm a couple of bottles) to test it and confirm it does not trip again.

You can find a flyer that illustrates this procedure HERE

If you have a Kozii SafeHeat Pro Warmer:

If the timer is ticking, but the water is not heating up, it is possible that the thermostat has tripped. To confirm the thermostat has tripped, look closely at the table or counter surface under the front left edge of Kozii. You should see a blue light. The blue light means that Kozii is working properly. If you do NOT see a blue light, the thermostat has tripped. To reset the thermostat, take the following steps:

  • Unplug Kozii.
  • Remove and drain the filler from the side of Kozii.
  • Remove the basket and bottle.
  • Drain out any remaining water.
  • Turn Kozii SafeHeat Pro over and push the red button firmly, using the tip of a pen or pencil.
  • Turn back over.
  • Your Kozii SafeHeat Pro should now be working.
  • Remember never to turn Kozii Pro on without water inside.

If this does not resolve your issue, please contact support@kiinde.com and we are happy to help.

Why is the water not rising in my Kozii Warmer?

There are three potential issues you should test:

#1 - The outlet is off

Please confirm the outlet you are plugged into is live. Please try different outlets, such as an outlet that a known appliance is plugged into.

#2 - Debris in the pump

There is a chance some debris may be lodged in the pump. Firmly tapping the side or top of Kozii Warmer can free up the debris. Please follow the instructions to dislodge debris. Make sure you read ALL the instructions before proceeding:

A - You should cover your work space with a towel.

B - There should be enough water in Kozii Warmer so that the water level is barely touching the FULL mark in the bottom of the warming chamber.

C - Plug in the Kozii Warmer.

D - DO NOT INSERT A BAG OR BOTTLE.

E - Without any bag or bottle in the warming chamber, turn Kiinde Kozii ON by setting the timer to 5 minutes.

F - With Kozii Warmer on a flat surface, firmly tap the sides and top of Kozii with the palm of your hand while Kozii Warmer is on (timer at 5 minutes). Be careful not to tap so firmly that water splashes out. The water in Kozii Warmer may be warm.

G - If the pump starts running again, you're finished! Turn Kozii Warmer off, empty the water and clean the unit to try and remove the debris that caused the clog in the first place.

H - If the pump does not start running, turn Kozii Warmer off immediately by turning the knob back to zero and unplugging the power cord from the wall.

#3 - The pump needs to be reprimed

Occasionally, Kozii's water pump needs to be re-primed. If the pump seems to be weaker than usual, bubbling excessively, or catching large amounts of air, try these steps.

A - Confirm you have added enough water so that the water is overflowing through the overflow drain at the top/back of the warming chamber during normal operation (with the bottle or bag in place).

B - If the pump still seems to be struggling, add the normal amount of water and turn the knob past 3 minutes to start the pump.

C - Wait 30 seconds, then manually turn the knob back to 0 to turn the pump off.

D - Wait another 30 seconds, then turn the knob to start the pump again.

E - Wait 30-60 seconds one more time. Usually this is all that is needed to re-prime the pump and purge the air out of the system.

F - If it doesn't work, try this stop/start procedure one more time.

Twist Pouches

What is the shelf life of Twist Pouches?

Twist and Foodii pouches will not expire. It is recommended to store Twist and Foodii pouches in a cool, dry location.

Are Twist Pouches Reusable?

Twist pouches arrive sterilized and ready to use. For health and regulatory reasons, Twist Pouches are for single use only. They can not be washed and reused. They are not washable. They are difficult to clean, and sterility is very important when handling breast milk for an infant.

Twist Pouches can be recycled anywhere that can process #7 (mixed) plastics. In some areas, they can be recycled with regular bottles or in single-stream recycling bins. We suggest you check with your local recycling service.

Do Twist Pouch Measurements change after thawing?

As the milk freezes, it expands and this can expand the bag slightly, which will lead to lower measurements.  We recommend using a scale just once (after thawing) to understand how accurate the measurements are after thawing.  Once you have used the scale one time, you'll have an understanding of what to expect in the future, and you'll be able to rely on the markings again.

Twist Pouches & Foodii Pouches – Are they the same?

YES!  The pouches are exactly the same!! Twist and Kiinde Foodii pouches are the same but are packaged and sold differently.

Twist and Foodii pouches can be used to store breastmilk, formula, and pureed food. All Kiinde pouches can attach to any breast pumps and can attach to our Twist Active-Latch nipples, Twist Snack Spouts, and Foodii Squeeze Spoons, or any nipple from another manufacturer.

Our snap-fit Foodii Funnel is also compatible with our pouches. That means, if you have multiple little ones at different feeding stages (for example, infant and toddler), you can stock up on Twist or Foodii pouches and use them for all your feeding needs.

Are Twist Pouches covered by insurance?

Please contact your insurance provider first to find out about coverage.

For additional information, we encourage you to reach out to our partners to get clear guidance regarding their benefits and coverage based on your exact plan.

The kiinde.com store does not deal with insurance companies directly.

What materials are Twist Pouches and accessories made of?

Twist Pouches, Twist Direct-Pump Adapters, Twist Keeper, Twist Squeeze Natural Feeding Bottle, and Twist Active Latch Nipples are made of polyethylene (LDPE and HDPE), polypropylene, and silicone.

All Kiinde Twist products are BPA-free, PVC-free, and phthalate-free.

All Twist nipples, adapters and cases are also top rack dishwasher safe.

How much air should I leave in the Twist Pouches when freezing them? Why should I freeze my Twist Pouches flat?

Breastmilk will expand approximately 10% when it freezes. You will be safe if you leave about 1/2oz of air in the pouch. This does NOT need to be a precise measurement!

When pouches are frozen flat, they have an increased surface area (for a given volume of milk), which translates to faster freezing, and faster thawing.

The less time your breastmilk spends at room temperature, the better!

How tight should the cap be on Kiinde Twist Pouches?

Tighten the caps on Twist firmly, the same you would tighten a water bottle, but do not over tighten as applying excessive torque can cause the plastic to distort, which can cause leaking.

How do I pump into Twist Pouches when using a manual pump?

If you are using a non-hands-free pump; this includes a manual pump, and a single or double electric pump, we recommend you use the Twist Squeeze Natural Feeding Bottle to hold the pouch during pumping.

Follow the instructions (Kiinde Instruction Manual) to snap the pouch into the bottle, thread adapter to the pouch, and thread your pump to the adapter.

What is the fastest, easiest way to squeeze the air out of the pouches for feeding?

  1. First, make sure you squeeze as much air as possible out of the pouch before popping on the Twist Active-Latch Nipple.
  2. With one hand, squeeze the pouch, through the openings in the bottle, until the milk level comes up just below the top of the pouch.
  3. Once the nipple is popped in place, you will only have a small amount of air left to squeeze out.
  4. You can squeeze the pouch very firmly - try reaching through the bottom of the bottle for best results, OR
  5. You can pinch the tip of the nipple as you squeeze. Pinching the nipple tip will cause the Twist Active Latch nipple to open and will allow the air to escape much more quickly as you squeeze.
  6. Make sure the bottle is level and upright as you squeeze the air out.

How accurate are the ounce and/or mL measurements on the Twist Pouches and how do I read them?

The volume measurements on the Twist Pouches are very accurate (within approximately 5%) when they are read correctly. These graduations are meant to be read when the pouches are fully expanded.

To expand the pouches, pull the front and back panels apart near the base of the pouch. This will open the bottom panel. Pushing up on the bottom panel with your finger can helpfully expand the pouch. It is easiest to expand the pouch once there is milk inside.

How can I use a nipple from another brand to feed, gas-free, from Twist Pouches?

We highly recommend that you first try Twist Active-Latch Nipples before switching to a different brand - they are loved by a wide range of babies, especially fussy feeders who will not latch onto nipples from many other brands!

Certainly, if you wish to use another nipple brand to feed with Twist Pouches, it is very easy and straightforward. Just snap the pouch into the bottle according to the instructions, remove the cap, and thread the appropriate direct-pump adapter for your nipple to the pouch. Thread the nipple onto the adapter, then squeeze the pouch to push the air out through the nipple. Make sure the bottle is upright and level while you squeeze the air out!
